Rebecca Shelby has been working in clay and sculpting with it most of her life. She was trained by Setsuya Kotani, a wonderful Japanese ceramic artist.
Rebecca Shelby’s sculptural works bridge the heavy and sturdy clay material with the delicate and light undersea plant forms, creating a harmonious and dynamic balance of visual interest. The seemingly alive pieces are heavily textured and the layers of glaze further accent the forms.
Her functional pottery color palette is fresh and bright, focusing on serving pieces recalling the blossoms of inspiration, such as cherry blossoms, sunflowers and calla lilies.
She received a BFA in Dance and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Her work is at Bank of the Arts in New Bern.
